Tree Removal Cost Guide: Central Coast, Newcastle & Sydney 2026

Tree Removal Cost Guide: Central Coast, Newcastle & Sydney 2026

One of the most common questions I get is "how much does it cost to remove a tree?" It is a fair question, and I understand why people want a ballpark figure before they pick up the phone. The honest answer is that tree removal costs vary significantly depending on the specifics of each job — but I can give you a realistic guide to what you should expect to pay across the Central Coast, Newcastle, and Sydney in 2026.

Typical Price Ranges

Here is a general guide based on tree size and complexity. These are indicative ranges for the Central Coast, Newcastle, and greater Sydney area.

Small trees (under 5 metres): $300 to $800. These are typically straightforward removals with good access. Think small ornamentals, overgrown shrubs, or young trees that have grown in the wrong spot.

Medium trees (5 to 10 metres): $800 to $2,500. This covers a wide range of common residential trees. The price depends heavily on location and access. A medium tree in an open backyard is very different from a medium tree wedged between a house and a fence.

Large trees (10 to 20 metres): $2,000 to $5,000. Large eucalypts, figs, and other mature trees require more time, more equipment, and more skill. If the tree is near a building or powerlines, sectional dismantling with rigging is required, which adds to the cost.

Very large or complex trees (20+ metres): $4,000 to $10,000+. These are significant operations that may require crane assistance, multiple days, traffic management, or coordination with power companies. Every one is priced individually.

What Affects the Price?

Understanding what goes into a tree removal quote helps you evaluate whether a price is fair. Here are the main factors.

Tree Size and Species

Bigger trees produce more waste, require more cuts, and take longer. Some species are harder to work with than others. Hardwoods like ironbark are denser and heavier than softwoods, which affects rigging and handling.

Location and Access

A tree in an open paddock with truck access is straightforward. A tree in a tight backyard, between two houses, over a pool, or near powerlines requires far more planning, skill, and time. If we cannot get a chipper close to the tree, the waste has to be carried out by hand, which adds labour.

Proximity to Structures

Trees near houses, garages, fences, pools, or sheds need to be dismantled piece by piece using rigging equipment. Every branch is lowered on ropes rather than free-falling. This is skilled, time-intensive work — and it is what keeps your property safe during the removal.

Powerlines

Trees near powerlines require specific qualifications, procedures, and sometimes coordination with the electricity provider to isolate the power. This adds complexity and cost but is absolutely non-negotiable from a safety perspective.

Stump Removal

Most tree removal quotes do not include stump grinding unless you ask for it. Expect to add $150 to $500 for stump grinding depending on the stump size and access.

Waste Removal

Standard practice is to chip all branches on site and remove the waste. Some operators leave the timber for you — others remove everything. Make sure your quote specifies what is included.

How to Get a Fair Quote

Here is my advice for getting honest value when you need a tree removed.

Get at least two quotes. Three is ideal. Make sure each operator inspects the tree in person. Phone quotes based on a photo are guesses, not quotes.

Check qualifications and insurance. Ask for a certificate of currency for public liability insurance and check that the operator has relevant arboricultural qualifications. A cheaper price from an uninsured operator is not a saving — it is a liability.

Ask what is included. Does the quote cover stump grinding? Waste removal? Clean-up? Make sure you are comparing like for like.

Be cautious of prices that seem too low. If one quote is dramatically cheaper than the others, ask yourself why. Uninsured operators, under-qualified workers, or cowboys who cut corners can end up costing you far more in property damage or injury claims.

Do not pay the full amount upfront. A small deposit is reasonable for large jobs, but the majority of payment should be on completion.
