How Much Does Tree Removal Cost on the Central Coast? (2026 Price Guide)
Tree removal on the Central Coast typically costs between $800 and $8,000+, depending on the size, species, location, and complexity of the job. A small tree under 5 metres might cost $500 to $1,200, while a large eucalyptus over 20 metres in a tight backyard in Terrigal or Erina could reach $5,000 to $10,000 or more. Below, I break down exactly what drives pricing so you can budget with confidence.
I'm Daymian McGovern, an AQF Level 3 Certified Arborist with over 13 years of experience removing trees across the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, and the North Shore. I've quoted thousands of jobs in suburbs from Gosford to Wyong to Woy Woy, and I want to give you an honest picture of what tree removal actually costs here.

What Factors Affect Tree Removal Cost?
1. Tree Size and Canopy Spread
The single biggest cost factor. A 25-metre Spotted Gum with a 15-metre canopy spread takes significantly more time, labour, and equipment than a 6-metre bottlebrush. Height determines the rigging complexity, and canopy width affects how much material needs to be processed and removed.
2. Access to the Tree
This is where Central Coast properties can get expensive. Many homes in suburbs like Avoca Beach, Killcare, and Woy Woy are built on steep blocks with narrow side access. If we cannot get a woodchipper close to the tree, every piece of timber and brush must be carried out by hand, adding hours of labour.
Properties with good access -- flat ground, wide driveways, no overhead wires -- are significantly cheaper to work on. A tree that costs $3,000 with good access might cost $5,000 or more on a steep, restricted block.
3. Proximity to Structures
A tree standing alone in an open paddock is vastly different from one overhanging a roof in Gosford or leaning over a neighbour's fence in Tuggerah. When we need to rig every branch to avoid damage to buildings, fences, pools, or sheds, the work slows down and the price increases. This precision work is where having a certified arborist matters most.
4. Species and Timber Density
Hardwood species like Ironbark, Spotted Gum, and Turpentine are significantly heavier than softwoods. Heavier timber means more strain on rigging equipment, slower lowering speeds, and more effort to process and remove. Some palm species, particularly Canary Island Date Palms, present their own unique challenges due to the frond weight and trunk density.
5. Power Lines and Utilities
If the tree is near Ausgrid power lines, we may need to arrange a temporary disconnection or work under specific safety protocols. This adds time and sometimes additional costs. Many streets across the Central Coast -- particularly in older suburbs like East Gosford, Umina, and Toukley -- have trees growing directly through power lines.
6. Council Permits and DA Requirements
Central Coast Council requires permits for the removal of most trees over 3 metres in height or with a trunk diameter over 100mm at chest height. The permit application costs around $80 to $150, and processing can take 2 to 6 weeks. Some trees may be heritage-listed or within ecological buffer zones, adding further requirements.
If your tree is dead, dying, or poses an immediate hazard, you may qualify for an exemption. We can help you navigate the council process as part of our service.
7. Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is usually quoted separately. Expect to pay between $200 and $600 per stump, depending on the stump diameter and root system. A 300mm stump is straightforward; a 1-metre Moreton Bay Fig stump is a half-day job. Many clients combine stump grinding with the removal for a package price.
8. Waste Removal
Most of our quotes include full waste removal -- all timber and brush chipped and taken away. If you want to keep the firewood (and Central Coast winters are cold enough to justify it), we can cut it to length and stack it, which sometimes reduces the price slightly since there is less to cart away.
How to Get an Accurate Quote
The only way to get a reliable quote is an on-site assessment. Photos and phone descriptions help, but they do not tell the full story. I need to see the lean of the tree, the soil conditions, the access, what is underneath, and what is above.
We provide free, no-obligation assessments across the Central Coast, from Gosford and Terrigal through to Wyong, The Entrance, and surrounding suburbs. I will walk through the job with you, explain the approach, and give you a written quote on the spot or within 24 hours.
Ways to Reduce Your Tree Removal Cost
- Bundle multiple trees: Removing 3 or 4 trees at once is more cost-effective than separate visits
- Keep the timber: If you want firewood, it can reduce waste removal costs
- Good access: If you can clear garden beds, remove temporary fencing, or open a gate before we arrive, it helps
- Off-peak timing: If your job is not urgent, scheduling during quieter periods (autumn/winter) can sometimes offer better availability and pricing
- Combine with stump grinding: Package pricing is usually better than separate visits
Why Price Should Not Be Your Only Factor
I understand that tree removal is an unplanned expense for most people, and it is natural to seek the lowest price. But this is one area where the cheapest quote can cost you far more in the long run. Unlicensed operators without proper insurance put your property, your neighbours' property, and themselves at risk. If something goes wrong, you could be liable.
Always check that your arborist carries current public liability insurance (we carry $20 million), has appropriate qualifications, and can provide a written scope of work.
