Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding

Professional stump grinding machinery operated safely to grind below ground level and remove trip hazards.

Once a tree has been removed, the stump left behind is more than just an eyesore. Old stumps attract termites and other pests, create trip hazards, interfere with mowing, and can send up unwanted regrowth for years. Our professional stump grinding service uses purpose-built machinery to grind the stump and major surface roots below ground level. The result is a clean, level area you can turf, garden, or build over. We can access tight spaces between fences and buildings, and we leave the grindings as mulch or remove them — your choice.

Our Process

What to Expect

1

Assess the Stump

We check the stump size, root spread, proximity to structures and underground services, and plan the best approach for safe, effective grinding.

2

Prepare the Area

We clear debris around the stump, mark any underground services, and set up protection for nearby garden beds, paths, or structures.

3

Position the Grinder

We manoeuvre our stump grinding machinery into position. Our machines can access tight spots between fences, garden beds, and buildings.

4

Grind Below Ground Level

We grind the stump and visible surface roots to approximately 200-300mm below ground level, ensuring no trip hazard remains and preventing regrowth.

5

Backfill and Clean Up

The wood chip grindings are used to backfill the hole and the area is raked clean. We can remove excess grindings or leave them as mulch for your garden.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep do you grind the stump?
We typically grind stumps to around 200 to 300 millimetres below ground level. This is deep enough to prevent regrowth, remove the trip hazard, and allow you to turf or garden over the area. If you need deeper grinding for construction purposes, let us know.
Will stump grinding damage my lawn or garden?
We take care to minimise impact on surrounding areas. There will be wood chip grindings around the stump which we can use to backfill the hole or remove entirely. Any minor lawn disturbance from the machine typically recovers within a few weeks.
Can you grind stumps in tight spaces?
Yes. We have machines that can fit through standard garden gates and access stumps in tight areas between fences, buildings, and garden beds. Let us know about access limitations when you request your quote.
Will the stump regrow after grinding?
Grinding to the depth we achieve removes the growth point and the vast majority of the root crown. Some species may send up minor sucker shoots from remaining roots, but these are easily managed and typically die off within a season.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Stump grinding costs depend on the stump diameter, access, and root spread. Small stumps may start from around $150 to $250, while large or difficult-access stumps can be more. We provide upfront pricing with no hidden fees.
