What Is a Certified Arborist? (And Why It Matters)

A certified arborist is a tree care professional who holds formal qualifications in arboriculture — the science and practice of managing trees. In Australia, this typically means holding an AQF Level 3 Certificate in Arboriculture (or higher), which covers tree biology, risk assessment, pruning standards, and safe work practices. A certified arborist is trained to assess, maintain, and remove trees safely and in accordance with Australian Standards.

This is not just a title people give themselves. It is a qualification backed by study, practical assessment, and ongoing professional development.

What Qualifications Does a Certified Arborist Hold?

In Australia, the key qualifications and credentials for a certified arborist include:

- AQF Level 3 Certificate in Arboriculture — The industry-standard qualification covering tree biology, identification, pruning to AS 4373, risk assessment, and safe tree work practices
- AQF Level 5 Diploma of Arboriculture — An advanced qualification for consulting arborists and those managing complex tree work
- Relevant licences — Chainsaw operation, elevated work platform (EWP), working at heights, and traffic management where required
- Insurance — Public liability and workers compensation insurance appropriate for the work being performed
- First aid certification — Current first aid and CPR qualifications

Our founder Daymian McGovern holds his AQF Level 3 Certificate in Arboriculture and has over 13 years of hands-on experience in the industry. He is not just qualified on paper — he has the field experience to back it up.

What Can a Certified Arborist Do That Others Cannot?

The difference between a certified arborist and an uncertified operator is significant:

- Accurate tree assessments — A certified arborist can identify species, diagnose health issues, assess structural integrity, and determine risk levels. An untrained operator is guessing.
- Pruning to Australian Standards — AS 4373 sets out how trees should be pruned to maintain health and structure. A certified arborist knows and follows these standards. An uncertified operator typically resorts to lopping, which causes long-term damage.
- Council applications — Many councils require an arborist report for tree removal applications. Only a qualified arborist can provide reports that councils will accept.
- Safe work practices — Tree work is one of the most dangerous occupations in Australia. Certified arborists are trained in safe work methods, risk assessment, and emergency procedures.
- Appropriate recommendations — A qualified arborist will tell you honestly whether a tree needs removal, pruning, or can be left alone. An uncertified operator is more likely to recommend unnecessary work.

How to Verify an Arborist's Qualifications

Before hiring anyone to work on your trees, ask for:

- Proof of qualifications — Ask to see their Certificate in Arboriculture or equivalent
- Insurance certificates — Current public liability (minimum $10 million is standard) and workers compensation
- ABN and business registration — Legitimate operators will have a registered business
- References or reviews — Check Google reviews and ask for examples of similar work
- A written quote — Professional arborists provide detailed written quotes, not just a number scribbled on the back of a card

If someone cannot provide these, walk away. The risk to your property, your liability, and your trees is not worth the saving.

Why It Matters for Your Property

Hiring an unqualified operator can result in:

- Damage to your trees that leads to decline, instability, or death
- Property damage from poorly planned tree work
- Personal liability if an uninsured worker is injured on your property
- Council fines if work is done without required approvals or not to standard
- Wasted money on work that creates more problems than it solves

Tree work is a significant investment. It makes sense to have it done properly by someone who knows what they are doing.
